About ISCB

The Indian Society of Chemists and Biologists (ISCB) was founded in 1995 with the following aims and objectives:

  1. To promote and advance the cause of multidisciplinary research by providing a common platform for better cooperation and coordination.
  2. To develop national consensus among the younger generation to strive for interdisciplinary cooperation.
  3. To promote awareness of recent developments in frontal areas of science.
  4. To organise symposia, conferences and special lectures in different disciplines of science.

As we enter the Fourteen years of functioning, we look back with some satisfaction on the way in which the society has grown over the past Fourteen years. There are currently 600 members, drawn from both academic and industrial settings, with research interests that cover a wide range of scientific and technological research, and located in different parts of the country. Six zonal secretaries coordinate activities at the all-India level. The central secretariat is currently based at Lucknow.

The past 13 National and International conferences organized by the ISCB were highly successes. The first and the second national conferences were held at CDRI, on the themes of 'Chemistry, Biology and Health Care' and 'Chemistry, Biology and Herbal Medicine.' The third national conference was hosted by the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal,Karnatka and the fourth was again at CDRI, Lucknow on 'Drug Research Scenario of the 21st Century.' 5th conference was organised at holiday inn Agra. 6th National conference were organise on Structure based Drug design: Search for New drugs in the year 2002 association with Alembic Ltd.Vadodara ,Gujrat

In Year 2003 ISCB has organized 7th National conference association with Agra University, Agra. The 8th conference on “ Chemistry Biology Path to Drug Discovery was held on August 30-31 at CDRI, Lucknow.
The 9th International conference was held at Rajkot, Gujrat during January 8-10, 2005, which was participated by ~700 delegates including participants from Europe, US, Taiwan, Russia, Canada and Egypt. The 10th International conference was organized at CDRI, Lucknow, where around 500 delegates participated from Canada, US, Taiwan, Russia, and Switzerland, Austria, UK, US, Russia, and Egypt, Iran.

The 11th International Conference on “Advances in Drug Discovery Research” was held at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (BAMU), Aurangabad, India during February 24-26, 2007 and approx. 600 delegates participated from all over the world. Last year, the 12th International Conference on the "Interface of Chemistry-Biology in Biomedical Research" was held on Feb 22-24, 2008 at BITS, Pilani and approximately 550 deligates participated in the conference from all over the world.

13th ISCB International Conference was organized on “Interplay of Chemical and Biological Sciences: Impact on Health and Environment on 26th February - 1st March 2009 at Delhi University, Delhi. 550 delegates participated in the conference from US, Germany, Sweden, France, Japan etc.

14th ISCB INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE (1SCBC-2010)
CHEMICAL BIOLOGY FOR DISCOVERY: PERSPECTIVES AND CHALLENGES

Indian Society of Chemists and Biologists, India has organized its 14th International Conference on “Chemical Biology for Discovery; Perspectives and Challenges” at the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) from Jan 15-18, 2010. David St. C. Black, Secretary General, IUPAC, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia was chief guest of the function. Approximately 550 delegates from India and abroad including places viz. United States, United Kingdom, Russia, France, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Taiwan, and Kuwait have participated this conference. Most of speakers have presented their work of current interest.

Many of talks highlighted synthesis, structure activity relationship, current trends in medicinal chemistry and drug research. The four days scientific programs includes 9 plenary lectures, 50 invited lectures by the eminent scientists and 16 oral presentations were scheduled. 255 posters were presented by young scientists and Ph. D. students in three different poster sessions.

Prof. Robert H. Grubbs, Nobel laureate has delivered special lecture in ISCBC-2010 on olefin metathesis reaction.
Several Scientists have presented their work on Drug Research, Chemical Sciences, Bionanotechology, Chemical Biology, Glycobiology, Biochemistry. Nancy B. Jackson, elected president of American Chemical Society, Colin J. Suckling, (UK) Michael D. Threadgill (UK) Mukund Chorghade (USA), Anamik Shah, Vice-President ISCB and P.M.S.Chauhan, General Secretary ISCB have participated  in valedictory function of conference.

In valedictory function all participants highlighted importance of interaction between scientists from biological sciences, chemical sciences and pharmaceutical sciences. Most of participants were discussed that process of drug research has become more difficult, risky and expensive due to very tight regulatory parameters. To make a breakthrough in this area a close interaction between the scientist and technologists in the area of chemistry and biology and other related areas is highly desired.

ISCB has also instituted ISCB AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE and ISCB YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARDto recognize scientific excellence in the area of Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences and Drug Research.
Apart from the national conferences, ISCB has organized several lectures that have addressed either cutting-edge developments in the chemical and life sciences, or highlighted interdisciplinary aspects of scientific work undertaken by the speakers.
