A Small Profile of the Department of Chemistry, Saurashtra University, Rajkot
The Department of Chemistry at Saurashtra University, Rajkot-GUJARAT is well recognized for its academic as well as research activities within India as well as globally. Its growing reputation in the field is well acknowledged by the fact that this Department has obtained the University Grant Commission’s Special Assistance Programme (Department Research Support) twice along with the Department of Science and Technology’s FIST (Fund for improvement of Science and Technology). This department has so far produced more than 700 Research Publications in Reputed International as well as National Journals. Also, the department has to its credit 5 National Patents. The Department has also produced more than 290 Ph.D. Scholars.
Currently the Department is fostering a mega project worth several hundred lakhs in INR by the name of “National Facility for Drug Discovery through New Chemical Entities development and Instrumentation Support to Small Manufacturing Pharma Enterprises” which will comprise of a 50,000 sq. feet new building housing some highly sophisticated Analytical Instruments like DSC, TGA, DTA, HPLC, UPLC, Single crystal XRD, 400 MHz NMR, Elemental Analyzer, HP-TLC, Flash Chromatography, Ion Chromatography, UV, IR, GC-MS, an advanced lab with 12 Fume Hoods, Microwave Synthesizer a Hydrogenator and an Autoclave.
This facility will support small pharma companies for their regulatory requirements, analysis method and analytical validations etc. It will also be open for academic research.
With the help of MSME clusters, the Department of Chemistry has started, Facility for Preservation of Molecular Diversity to collect, preserve and supply drug like molecules synchronizing hundreds of colleges and departments through faculties and researchers. The Rules, Terms and Conditions along with the Internet Site are being developed for the same.
The Department of Chemistry also boasts of several prestigious projects with its facilities in pharmaceutical research, especially NIH funded collaborative project on NNIRTIS jointly with New Jersey Medical College, along with other projects in collaboration of Alembic Ltd., Dabur Research Foundation, Claris Life Sciences, Nicolas Piramal Research Centre etc.
The Department of Chemistry, Saurashtra University, has been a pioneer in the field of contract research by its collaborations with Merck, Du Pont, R. J. Jhonson, Ranbaxy, Astrazeneca and earned more than 1 Crore INR.
Most of the faculties have projects in drug discovery, polymer composites and bio-waste. Apart from the Organo-Pharmaceutical and analytical groups the department also has strong research groups in the field of Physical Chemistry as well as Catalysis with a good number of publications.
A Brief on Saurashtra University
Saurashtra University is one of the most widely spread university with 14 affiliated science colleges in the state of Gujarat. On campus, there are 27 Post Graduate departments running various Post Graduate programmes.
